Default How 2: Mask Fan

EDIT: Ouch....I'll be shrinking the pics in a few.

Here's a easy fan install for any mask. Going to show you how to make and install for a clean setup.

#1: Tools you'll need.
- Soldering Iron
- Wire Strippers (Teeth work too)
- Solder
- Flux

#2: Equipment you'll need
- Fan
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a...ING-FAN/1.html
- AAA Battery Pack
http://cgi.ebay.com/AAA-3Ax3-4-5V-ba...item4a9c7b372a

#3: Equipment/Consumable items
These aren't required items. You can do the install with super and hot glue.
- An assortment of Shrink Tubing
- Connectors (Any kind will do)
- Zip ties (Plastic/Velcro...Any type will do)
- 4-40 screw (Hot Glue will also work to keep the fans in place)
- 4-40 Tap
- Pair of pliers

Note: One fan will do the job (those little fans push a lot of air for their size). I went ahead and used 2 in case one when Tango Uniform during a game.

First thing first. You need to plan out the build. This setup was what I came up with for the Grill mask. Each mask is going to be different so look at it, visualized how you might be able to attach everything and start the project.

I ran the fans in a parallel setup. Here's a basic setup without all the glam and glitter of the shrink tubing and connectors. There's nothing wrong with running it as is. Superglue and ele tape the ends together, hot glue the fans into your mask and you should be good to go.

Warning: Make sure you get the colors right or you'll end up blowing the fans. For some reason if you cross the wires on these fans they'll fry.

Best thing to do is solder your connections to give them a permanent bond and shrink tube the wires to make your install nice and clean.

Like I said. Each install is going to be different so I'm not going to bore you with how to shrink tube or run your wires. You can see how I did it through the pics.
Note: If you don't have a heat gun, a lighter or hair dryer will work just fine.

This is what your final product should look like.

Cut your screws (4-40) down to the size you need, mine were cut to 1/2 in and tap one or all your holes (4-40) on your fan. I just used one screw to hold the fan in place.

Position your fans and install the bolts through the top grill and into the fan.

Run your wires along the top of the mask and out the top of the vents. Zip tie the battery pack and run your battery wires to your fan connectors.

There you go. A nice clean setup.

did you buy the battery boxes from that eBay link? if so, I have 2 questions...

first, how long did shipping take from Hong Kong...the few times I've ordered from Asia, it always seems to take a month+

second, did you get 4, as stated in the auction? if so, wanna sell me one? don't really need 4 of them for myself

and, per the picture with the dime and nickel, these appear to be as small as the tiny ones I saw on eBay...sweet find!!

As Beemer said, thanks for taking the time to post pics and sharing...nice work...

It took under 2 weeks for the battery boxes. I got mine from E-bay but I'm not sure if that was the same guy or not. My only bitch on those battery boxes was the hole to lock the sliding cover on was on the wrong side. It works tho and all I did was made a hole on the proper side.

You can buy them at any brick and mortar ele store (Radio Shack) but it's going to cost you about the same for 1. I think I did the 4 pack but the extra ones I got are setup in other projects. Sorry.

Ck and see if they sell them at the online store I linked for the fans, I never ck'ed.

How loud is it? Are you blowing, or sucking (relative to your eyes)?

Done a very similar mod to this, same fans, uglier wiring. I also used a 9v instead of 3 AAAs and an on/off switch wired in. You'll forget it's on, but the switch is nice to have if you really have to engage ears. On the rare occasion I get fog, it clears it out in seconds.

It's not bad. You can't hear it outside of the mask and it's blowing in but you can always swap them around..

These fans are super quiet, they won't interfere at all with game play. If you push 9v, it's going to whine pretty good but with my setup it's not an issue (4.5v). It's even quieter at 3 volts.
