View Full Version : Got my anodising kit today...minus one critical component

It was all there, with the exception of the power supply, rendering the entire kit virtually useless...the only thing there was in it's place was a handwritten note explaining that they were on back-order thru the manufacturer, and they expected them to be back in stock mid-to-late September, effectively pushing my start-up date out almost another full month :( I would have appreciated a little warning, or notice at the time I placed my order...they had my email address, both thru the paypal payment, and the many emails back and forth with the guy asking lots of questions over the past month and a half...

so I started searching online, and found the exact same PS for roughly $70 cheaper, and a quick call assured me they had them in stock...

the guy I bought the kit was very understanding, and refunded the cost of the PS plus the shipping costs within 2 hours of my request, so other than not telling me about the back-order up front, I can't fault the guy at all...so now I can buy from the cheaper source, and get things moving forward...I should be breaking my tanks in, in about another week and a half or so...

still have to buy the basics...tanks (rubbermaid totes)...heaters...fish-tank "bubblers"...make my racking system...then I'll be all set!!! :bananacha::broc::cucumber::dance2:

I'm tryin chief!! I'm probably more impatient than anyone...I ordered the kit a week and a half ago...for some reason, priority took an extra long time...now I have to wait for what will more than likely be UPS ground...so at least another week...

once I get solid colors going, I intend to offer the works...dust, gloss, and tattoos...fades...splashes...simple (at first) graphics...multicolor accent pieces, etc...etc...once it's up and running, the only limits will be the limits of your imagination... :D

easy enough cheif...the one at work has down-time quite often on the off shift (I work swing) so I should be able to have someone fire it up for a special run...

sand, I've pretty much put the aurora waaaaaaaaay on the back burner...I'm fairly certain that no-one will share the secret, and I'd bet the equipment is more advanced than anything I could easily get my hands on, anytime soon...

since the subject has come up, I'll ask...what's the deal with baking barrels, etc to change the ano? anyone know what that's all about? heard about it quite some time ago, but never gave it another thought...

Baking /heating them just causes the dye used in anno to change colors, due to thermal breakdown.

One word... Raku

Probably not applicable to our markers due to the extreme temperatures, but the finish looks cool!

Maybe you didn't see the piece I received this week (http://www.automags.org/forums/showthread.php?t=235819)...

The pneu on the right is my old "pewter" ULE. The left one is a recent ebay purchase. I don't remember all the colors available for ULE's, but I'm pretty sure there were no "bronze" colored ones. Also, compare that tac rail to the frame and the pneu rail. From the baked marker pictures I've seen, the body probably used to be pewter and the rail faded to blue.

So, k0m0d067, pm me when you get rollin'. That rail is butt-ugly. I'm not sure about the body yet, but one of the two will be joining the rail in the ano bath.

I swapped the bodies around last night. I do like the bronze on the pneumag. I admit that I never liked pewter in the first place; the pneumag was a "rescue" purchase like the ULE.

There must be a difference in the quality of the dye used when it comes to parts that don't "bake", like higher temperature tolerance. However, they managed to exceed the limits on this one.

But now I have a pewter body on a 'pewter' rail. An old tac rail deserves better.

update (posted here because I can't send PM's from my home PC for some reason):

currently my kitchen remodel is taking up all of my free time...in other words, the wife won't let me do anything fun, 'til it's finished...I can't say that I blame her, since, if I get distracted, it won't get finished ;) so I guess I had better get off the interweb, and get 'er done!

MAN you get some funny looks when asking to buy 5 gallons of battery acid :p

after running around all weekend (not working on the kitchen, to the wife's dismay :D) I have everything I need (I hope) to get things rolling...I'll be building a workbench to set up on, and then begin mixing chemicals in the next few days...I should have some test runs in by the end of the coming weekend, and, once all is underway, will post the offer in the BST/Dealer's section...

yup...went to AutoZone first, and they only had 1 quart in stock...Schucks managed to supply me 2 quarts at almost double the price per quart as AutoZone...so NAPA came thru...one container, 5 gallons...$28 plus tax :D

so Cy, how bad are the fumes? the guy I got my kit from never mentions them, but another resource sells anti-fume additive, etc...

Yep Napa saved me too. I called just about everywhere and nobody had it. Then i called napa and they had just enuff.

I never had a problem with the fumes, but i was also in my garage with the door open. I also never stood above the tanks, more to the side with my hands/arms over them. The one thing i would sugest if you are makin your ano shop in an enclosed room to make an exuast hood. The fumes are there but you tend to get used to then after about 5 of so mins and really wont smell them to much after. But mostly with all the heat you will be producing there will be alot of extra moisture comming out of the tanks that may cause problems. I had to top my tanks off after several uses. I also had the problem of rinceing the parts out of the acid bath tank. If you leave the smallest trace amount on the part it will discolor in the dye bath.

Yeah, mine's going to be in my garage as well, although I will probably need to do it with the door closed, since you have to keep the acid bath at normal room temperatures, and it's already starting to get a tad cold...so an exhaust hood will be in order sometime soon...wonder how effective a range/sove exhaust hood would be...

I've been warned about making sure to rinse the parts VERY thoroughly between ALL the baths...any "carry-over" between any of them will lessen the effectiveness of the line...

finished the acid bath's aeration system, and built a shelf for the acid tank, and power supply to sit on...I REALLY hope the breaker to my garage can handle whatever juice this thing's gonna use up :D

having problems with photo-hosting sites, so pics aren't going to be forth-coming any time soon...

furthermore, I realised that I need to be able to keep all the chemicals and liquids from freezing, and my garage is unfinished, and unheated, so now I'm building a "cubicle" of sorts...a small space that won't bankrupt me keeping it heated...if it's not one thing, it's another *sigh*

MANN, it's not quite finished yet...

Cy, nahh...this isn't another G-force deal...my work will look good ;)

Rudzy, I deserve all the harrassment you guys can serve up...

in regards to a progress report, I've got 3 walls and a ceiling built and insulated, but can't do the 4th wall 'til all the equipment and stuff is set up inside, 'cuz the thing's gonna be tiny (slightly less than 4'x8') and I won't have room to do much set-up/building once the final wall is up...

technically too small to be called a "meth lab", so the nickname has been downgraded to the "Meth closet" :D
